  • All Music Guide

The third of five albums that RCA Records released by multi-talented Gene Rice. This time, Gerald Levert, Marc Gordon, Chuckii Booker, the Rude Boys, and others help produce and write the nine songs on the set. The consortium didn't help Rice's luck, as none of the songs -- save for a remake of Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You a Little More" -- really captivates. Rice's voice, a rich tenor-baritone, overpowers some of the tracks and seems out of place on the hip-hop selections. The grandiose ballad "Come a Little Closer" and the up-tempo "Who's Pleasin' You" are not time capsule material but are less mundane than the others. Rice also contributes some keyboards, and Mark Anthony (the Elements) adds some backing vocals.

Biography

Gene Rice

Contemporary soul singer Gene Rice was born in Baltimore in 1950. Driven by the RB hit "You're Gonna Get Served," his 1991 debut album Just for You earned solid reviews and placed on the RB charts as well. A selftitled album followed in 1993, but it was his last release for RCA. - Bil Carpenter, All Music Guide Read more
